A Day at Sunnyside Nursery School

8am Early arrival playtime

9am Children arrive and are welcomed into the nursery and registered. They may choose from a range of activities until all present either following their own special interests or choosing from resources set out.

Area of Learning Emphasised: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6

9.30am Shared Registration. Children help change calendar; day, date, month, year, season and note the weather. Share news; birthdays, special events etc. Count children ( E.g. boys and girls = total present) Look at the numbers. Discuss Special Themes Discuss theme for the week and activities for the day. Encourage everyone to contribute with their ideas and experiences.

9.45am Return to / start activities: Children choose and with guidance as required move between the areas of activities such as art and craft, special theme activities, Construction materials, creative play, book library, ICT activities, puzzles, learning/shared games, number activities, writing and other pen control activities. Free-flow outdoor play is encouraged as much as possible.

10.30am Tidy up and wash hands after activities. Refreshments: Children help with sharing out plates, cups, drinks and snacks. This is also a social time during which we can discuss what we have been doing.

10.50am Outside play together or in groups Coats and boots on according to the weather. A variety of outdoor apparatus is provided according to the season and for developing different skills.

11.20am Children are helped to select a story book for shared reading time and individual readers. Time for staff to observe and reflect on children pursuing their own special interests, noting how their learning is developing and planning for their next steps.

11.50am All together for evaluation of the morning activities. Singing or music and movement. Story time.

12.00 noon Children enjoy the social aspect of sitting together eating their packed lunches with staff.

12.45pm Tidy away. Shared activities such as Book/Story Time.

1.00pm Home time for some children Rest time for others.

1.30pm Special activities: for example literacy, numeracy, computing activities, physical, creative or science activities; walk or nature studies according to topics.

2.30pm Drink and Snack time. Creative play/Music and movement/ Circle/ Discussion time.

3.00pm Home time for children unless they are staying on by arrangement.

3.00 - 6.00pm After school care available by individual arrangement with a variety of activities available.

This is a general overview and is used for guidance. We are very flexible and spontaneous activities take place as appropriate throughout the day, for example depending on the weather, visitors etc.
